News agency Press Trust Of India tweeted today that the Delhi High Court has granted the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi, the permission to sell its devices based on Qualcomm chipset till January 8 in India. The news comes as a big relief after the court had banned the import and selling of Xiaomi devices in the country on December 9 in response to a patent violation case filed by Ericsson.See Also: Xiaomi Banned In India, All You Need To Know
Which Devices Can Xiaomi Sell ?At the time the court imposed the ban, Xiaomi was selling its phablet size smartphone, RedMi Note. RedMi Note actually has two variants. One is 3G only variant and the other variant also supports 4G networks. The 3G variant of RedMi Note is powered by a MediaTek processor (MT6592), while the 4G version runs on a Qualcomm chipset (Snapdragon 400). Today’s court judgement means that Xiaomi can sell the 4G variant of RedMi note, but not the 3G variant.Xiaomi was recently also selling its budget oriented smartphone RedMi 1S, which also runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset (the device had its final sale on December 8 in India). So legally, Xiaomi can also sell RedMi 1S.
Today’s judgement also clears up the way for Xiaomi to launch its latest Flagship Mi4, which also runs on a Qualcomm based Snapdragon 801 chipset.
It is worth noting here that the court has granted the permission to sell Qualcomm chipset based devices only till January 8, 2015. The “Ex Parte Injunction” that the court granted last week to ban the import and sale of Xiaomi products in the country is applicable till February 5, 2015.
For those who are not aware of the issue, last week (on December 9), the Delhi High Court issued an “Ex Parte Injunction” to ban the import and selling of Xiaomi devices in India till February 5, 2015. You may read more about the issue in detail in this post.
Update: Hugo Barra, Vice President, Xiaomi International has posted a letter on his Facebook and Google+ page informing the Indian Mi fans about the resumption of sale in India. Hugo mentioned in the letter that Xiaomi will be selling both RedMi 1S and the RedMi Note (4G variant). Next RedMi 1S sale will be on December 23 and registrations for the same will also start soon.
