Motorola Nexus 6The most anticipated launch of the GOSF was the Nexus 6. It was made available for sale on December 10 mid-night on the Indian Google Play Store in two variants (32 GB and 64 GB) and two colours (Mid-Night Blue and Cloud White). The 32 GB variant is priced at Rs. 43999 and the 64 GB variant is priced at Rs. 48999. Despite the high price, the device was sold out on the Play Store within a few hours. Apart from the Play Store, Nexus 6 will also be available on Flipkart at the same price.
Google ChromecastAfter one and a half year of US launch (in July 2013), Google finally launched its thumb drive shaped media player in the Indian market. For the uninitiated, Chromecast is a USB drive shaped media player device which you can use to watch videos from streaming services like YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Eros Now, etc. One thing that I’d like you to know is you can’t stream movies and TV shows from Netflix or Hulu in India as these services are not yet available here. However, if you are a bit tech savvy, you may use a proxy server to fake your location. Then you’ll be able to stream the content from Netflix and Hulu.Chromecast in India is currently being sold exclusively by Snapdeal (it’ll soon be available at select Airtel stores as well) for Rs. 2999 and is accompanied with some exciting offers from Airtel and Eros Now. Existing Airtel broadband (mobile internet users not included) users will get 20 GB extra data per month for three months over and above their existing data plan. New Airtel broadband users, apart from the above mentioned benefit, will also have their activation charge (Rs. 1000) waived. Chromecast buyers will also get Eros Now premium subscription for a period of two months. It means you can watch unlimited Bollywood movies in High Definition using your Chromecast for two months.
One interesting thing to note is that you can get the US version of Chromecast at a price of Rs. 2699 at ebay.in, which is less than the Snapdeal’s price. But, taking into consideration the offers from Airtel and Eros, I’ll recommend if you’re buying a Chromecast in India, buy it from Snapdeal.
AppyStore (An app store for kids)In my opinion, this was the most interesting GOSF launch. Mauj Mobile India Ltd. launched an app store called AppyStore dedicated to kids between the age 1.5 years to 6 years. Though its called an app store, it also includes videos and games. As per the information provided by Mauj Mobile, AppyStore has more than 3000 apps, games and videos and it works on both freemium as well as premium model. The store aims to help parents find content that is suitable for being viewed by children.
Airtel Digital TV On Demand Wifi Dongle, InfinityTo give competition to chromecast, Airtel launched its wifi dongle for its digital TV service, called Infinity. The dongle will allow Airtel digital TV users to connect their set-top box to the internet and stream TV shows and movies in HD (or even in HD+, if the set-top box supports). The dongle is being sold by Infibeam at a price of Rs. 849.
iberry Auxus One and Auxus RistHonk Kong based iberry lunched its stylish looking smartphone Auxus One and a waterproof smartwatch, Auxus Rist in India in partnership with ebay.in. Auxus One is an Android smartphone powered by 1.7 GHz MediaTek octa-core MTK6592 CPU and 2 GB of RAM. It runs on Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) out of the box. Its other tech specs include a 5.5 inch 720p HD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, dual SIM functionality and USB OTG support. The highlighting feature of this smartphone is its 15 Mega Pixel camera (manufactured by Sony) which can be rotated upto 207 degrees (much like Oppo N1) and hence serves as both front as well as rear camera. Auxus One is currently being sold exclusively by ebay.in in India at a discounted price of Rs. 15990. But you can actually get a 10 percent additional discount by using the coupon code “EBAY10DEAL” and get the device for Rs. 14391 only. The first 600 buyers to buy the Auxus One will also get some freebies including an Auxus Travel Power Bank, Auxus Wi-Cam Controller, one Anti-Glare Screen Guard and one Regular Screen Guard. Auxus One accessories like flip cover, scratch guard and battery are also available on ebay.in (but these are not free). Auxus Rist is a waterproof smartwatch running Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). Please do note that it is not Android Wear, it’s the regular Android OS that powers smartphones and tablets. The smartwatch has a 1.3 GHz MediaTek dual core MTK6572 processor along with 512 MB of RAM. The screen size is 1.54 inch with a resolution of 240x240 pixels. The watch interestingly also supports cellular connectivity (2G/3G) using a SIM card and also has a 3 MP fixed focus camera which is capable of recording videos at 720p.
I don’t know about the quality of the products by iberry, but the landing page (or the product page) that iberry has created on ebay doesn’t look very attractive (at least from today’s standards). Some of text on the page is not even clearly visible (yellow text on white background). If Google’s name were not attached to it, I would probably consider it spammy. But since iberry’s products are listed on official GOSF website, I think it must be legit.
Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 Pro With Built In ProjectorLenovo launched its high-end premium tablet Yoga 2 Pro at the GOSF. Yoga 2 Pro is a 13.3 inch tablet with quad HD display (resolution of 2560x1440 pixels). The most important feature of the tablet is its multimedia capabilities. The tablet has an in built projector which is capable of producing images of size over 50 inches on any wall. To enhance the audio experience, the Yoga Tablet 2 Pro comes with an integrated 8W JBL Sound System, Dolby Audio and a 5W sub-woofer. The tablet runs on Android 4.4 (KitKat) out of the box and is powered by a 1.86 GHz Intel Atom Z3745 Quad Core processor along with 2 GB of RAM. The tablet also supports 4G LTE. The only worry that I have about this tablet is that it runs on an Intel Atom chipset. We have seen in the past that devices with Intel Atom CPUs many times get Android updates with a delay (or sometimes don’t get the updates at all). But since its a flagship tablet from Lenovo, I expect that it’ll get Android 5.0 Lollipop (and even future) Android updates.
It is interesting to note that though Flipkart is not participating in this year’s GOSF, Lenovo is selling this tablet exclusively on Flipkart. Actually, the tablet was launched at GOSF (and it is listed in the Exclusive Launches section of the GOSF website), you’ll have to buy it from Flipkart, which is not a GOSF partner this year. Is it a bad news for buyers ? Not really. Flipkart is also running its own Big App Day Sale under which you you can get some special discounts if you shop using Flipkart’s mobile app. So its a win win situation for the buyers.
