The holiday season has already started and this is the time of the year when Indians feel left out of the party. In the western world, shoppers get huge discounts, thanks to Black Friday and Cyber Monday; consumers in India don’t get much out of the December holiday season. GOSF is Google’s attempt to change this scenario and bring the charm of holiday deals to the Indian shores as well. For the uninitiated, GOSF or The Great Online Shopping Festival, as the name suggests, is an online shopping festival organised by Google in the month of December in partnership with some of the big names in the Indian ecommerce world. Google has been organising the festival since 2012 and in 2014 it is in its third iteration. In 2012 it was a single day event, but this time the festival will last for three days, 10th to 12th December.
What’s in store for you?
Google has partnered with over 450 reputed online shopping portals like Amazon India, Snapdeal and Paytm for the festival, which are not only expected to offer heavy discounts, but also to promote their brands on social media and Google Display Network. To make the festival even more special, Google has come up with some very exciting contests and games in association with its sponsors. I’m summarising some of the offers and contests below-
- You can win 14 minutes of free shopping(upto Rs. 2.5 lakh) , a Nexus 6 smartphone or Rs. 299 worth of shopping (for 1 lakh users). To participate in this contest you have to register for Aditya Birla Money’s finance management program called My Universe, which I think is the biggest sponsor of the GOSF this year. Once you’re registered, you’re in. But you can increase your chances of winning by connecting your bank account or your credit/debit card to the program. Here I encountered a problem though. After registering for the My Universe program when I tried to log in to connect my bank account I was greeted with a message that my account was being prepared and I needed to log in after 15 minutes. But the problem is, its been over three hours since I registered and I’m still getting the same message. (Update: Now I’m not getting that message but I’m still unable to log in as the log in screen is not accepting the password. And I know I’m entering it correctly)
- There’s also a quick game that you can play and win discounts. You’re asked to choose the products of your choice (that you’re looking to buy this GOSF) and once the game starts, you see many items appear quickly and randomly on your screen. You have to click on the products that you earlier selected. The more products you click correctly, the more points you score.
- GOSF will also have an exclusive launch corner where some manufacturers will launch their products. Motorola will be launching Nexus 6 in the Indian market during the festival. Google Chromecast was also launched on December 9, a day before the festival starts and will start selling on December 10 via ecommerce site Snapdeal.
- Keeping first time online shoppers in mind, GOSF will also have a Rs. 299 corner where everything will be priced under Rs. 299 with free home delivery. All the products in this section will have Cash On Delivery (COD) as a payment option.
Why isn't Flipkart joining the party
While most of the Indian ecommerce players are busy promoting their brands for the GOSF, India’s largest etailer, Flipkart has decided to give this year’s GOSF a miss. Flipkart is instead running its own discount fest under the name “Big App Shopping Days” from December 8 to 12 (two days in advance of the GOSF). A Flipkart spokesperson has although said that their Big App Sale has nothing to do with their non-participation in the GOSF.
I guess, maybe after the Big Billion Day fiasco, Flipkart is wary of doing another sale on a large scale unless they have done all the required homework. The App Sale that they are doing is also not being promoted much (neither online nor offline).See Also: How To Strike The Best Deal While Shopping Online, New Product Launches At GOSF 2014
